Samovar Tea Recipes from Old Russia

Russian Fruit Tea

  1. Fire up your Samovar with 2 quarts of water.
  2. In a small teapot , make a concentrated tea by combining 1/2 cup apple cider, 3-5 cloves and 5-6 tablespoons of Orange Pekoe Tea.
  3. Add a small amount of boiling water from your Samovar and steep for 7-10 minutes. You can place the small teapot on the crown of your samovar.
  4. To serve, pour a small amount of the strained concentrate into a cup or glass, and fill the rest of the cup with boiling water from your Samovar.
  5. Sweeten to taste with honey or fruit jam.
  6. Enjoy!


Russian Spiced Black Tea

  1. Fire up your Samovar with 2 quarts of water.
  2. In a small teapot , make a concentrated tea by combining 3-5 tablespoons of Black Tea leaves, 6-8 whole cloves, 3 tablespoons of grated orange peel, a pinch or two of cinnimon to taste.
  3. Add a small amount of boiling water from your Samovar and steep for 7-10 minutes. You can place the small teapot on the crown of your samovar.
  4. To serve, pour a small amount of the strained concentrate into a cup or glass, and fill the rest of the cup with boiling water from your Samovar.
  5. Sweeten to taste with honey or fruit jam.
  6. Enjoy!

  2. In a small teapot , make a concentrated tea by combining 5-7 tablespoons of Green Tea leaves, 2 tablespoons of grated orange peel or lemon peel (or a combination of both).
  3. Add a small amount of boiling water from your Samovar and steep for 7-10 minutes. You can place the small teapot on the crown of your samovar.
  4. To serve, pour a small amount of the strained concentrate into a cup or glass, and fill the rest of the cup with boiling water from your Samovar.
  5. Sweeten to taste with honey.
  6. Enjoy!


Grandma Becky's Banana Cake

  • 1 & 3/4 cup flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/3 cup shortening
  • 2/3 cup sugar
  • 2 beaten eggs
  • 1 cup banana

Sift flour, powder, soda, salt. Add sugar to oil -- beat light and fluffy. Add eggs. Add flour mix. Bake at 350 til toothpick comes out clean. Enjoy!


Belle Schuster's Apple Cake

Crust:

  • 1/2 cup margarine
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 3 cups flour
  • 3 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • (orange juice as needed)

Filling:

  • 18-25 large apples
  • cinnamon
  • 1 Cup sugar

Will bake at 350 for 50 minutes

  1. Combine margarine & sugar in mixmaster bowl, add eggs, mix
  2. In a bowl combine flour, baking powder and salt -- mix together
  3. Add this to first part
  4. Add orange juice in small amounts
  5. Make a ball of dough and put in fridge for a couple of hours
  6. Cut apples and add cinnamon and sugar
  7. Cut dough in half and roll 2 dough rectangles 13"x 9"
  8. Lower crust in greased pan
  9. Layer cinnamon, sugar and apples
  10. Put top crust on
  11. Put holes in top crust before baking
  12. Brush or dab water on top crust
  13. Bake at 350 for 50 minutes (until crust slightly golden)
  14. When done, put in freezer to firm up before slicing
